Any hope Lindsey had of finishing the showroom dissolved once she got Cameron home and her friend fell apart. It was a small price to pay to make sure her best friend was all right. Her relationship with Dan had never been easy, but this was different. This time, he hadn’t hurt her—just the boys.

Lindsey sat with Cameron, cuddled up in her room watching reruns. It was dark before her ex-husband called.

“How dare I— what?!“ Cameron fumbled to cancel the call in fury and pitched the phone across the room. She buried her face in her pillow and screamed loudly enough to wake the neighbors.

Back to square one, Lindsey thought, patting her friend’s back gently. By the time Lindsey dragged herself home, the first hints of dawn were showing. Rod’s truck was parked just a ways down from Design of the Times.

Lindsey didn’t feel like tripping through the maze of material laid out in the showroom, so she slipped in the back door and made a bee-line for bed. Jasmine was kneading the cover before her pillow was under her head. Her fingers tripped lightly down the cat’s back.

“It’s okay, little miss. Crisis averted,” she whispered. As relieved as she was that the kids—and Jasmine—were doing okay, she slipped into a deep sleep.
